ALOR SETAR – Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah graced the finals of the River Sports Festival 2016 in Tanjung Chali, here today.
The 83rd edition of the biennial sporting event was held in conjunction with the 88th birthday of the Sultan of Kedah.
Also present were the Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Hajah Haminah, Kedah Council of Regency chairman Tan Sri Tunku Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah and members Tan Sri Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah and Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah.
The event started with the Malaysian Armed Forces and the Fire and Rescue Department teams heading the boat procession, followed by boats from the Royal Malaysia Police, Malaysian Civil Defence Department and the Marine Operations Force.
Tuanku Abbdul Halim also consented to watch the finals of the seven categories of the event, which were contested by 19 teams as well as handing over the prizes to the winners.
The Champion of Champions title was won by the Muda Agricultural Development Authority team after clocking 4 minutes and 28.6 seconds, leaving the Istana Anak Bukit team in second spot and Syarikat Air Darul Aman in third place.
A team from Vietnam won the international invitational category beating teams from Brunei and the Philippines to second and third place, respectively.
Kedah recorded 4’30.2s to win the inter-states category, followed by Penang (4’41.8s) in second place and Kuala Lumpur in third place with 4’43.9s.
A total of 14 categories were contested at the festival to vie for the Sultan Kedah Cup, Agong Cup and Menteri Besar Cup with RM70,000 in prize money being offered. – BERNAMA
