PUTRAJAYA – Thirty-three schools in the country have been selected to promote the Kuala Lumpur SEA Games 2017 scheduled for August, said Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.
He said the KL2017@Schools programme, which was launched on March 2 in Perak and would end on May 20, would bring the excitement of the biggest games in Southeast Asia to schoolchildren, teachers and parents.
He said the KL SEA Games would be promoted as the Green Games and schoolchildren would be taught the importance of safeguarding the environment.
“The KL2017@Schools programme would promote recycling, saving electricity and proper disposal of waste,” he said to reporters at KL2017@Schools programme at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Putrajaya Precinct 8 (1) here today.
The sports featured in the KL2017@Schools programme include ‘Super Sepak’ (of trying to beat the soccer goalkeeper in scoring goals), Cycle Power Challenge (of working in a team), Mini Golf, Field Sports Challenge and Basketball Shoot.
Under the green initiative, he said, students would be encouraged to bring their own drink containers to reduce waste, sort waste and use recycled material to decorate their sports houses.
Khairy said students aged 16 and above, teachers and parents were encouraged to register as volunteers for the SEA Games.
“We are still open for registration. We will conduct training up to August,” he said.
The KL SEA Games 2017 are scheduled to be held from Aug 19 to 31. – BERNAMA
