MELAKA – Eight relief centres were opened in Jasin and Alor Gajah as at 3 pm today to accommodate 264 victims from 46 families who were evacuated after their homes were inundated by flood waters following heavy downpours in the two districts since yesterday.
Melaka Civil Defence Department director Effendy Ali said of the total, 186 victims were housed in five relief centres in Alor Gajah, while 78 others were taking shelter at three centres in Jasin.
He said the relief centres in Alor Gajah were in Kampung Gadek community hall, which houses 40 victims, Bukit Balai Durian Tunggal community hall (14), Bukit Tambun Durian Tunggal community hall (eight), Surau Taman Seri Cahaya Tebong Machap (14) and Sekolah Kebangsaan Belimbing Dalam (19).
The three centres in Jasin were at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Simpang Bekoh, which accommodates 50 victims, Sekolah Kebangsaan Chohong (25) and Asahan community hall (three), he said.
“Twenty of the victims in Jasin are students of a tahfiz school located in the district,” he told Bernama when contacted here.
Effendy said the first relief centre was opened in Jasin at 1 am and the number of evacuees at all centres was expected to rise following continuous heavy rains. – BERNAMA
