ALOR SETAR – A total of 20 of the 21 Barisan Nasional state assemblymen were present at a meeting with the Regency Council of the Sultan of Kedah at Wisma Darul Aman here yesterday.
It is believed the meeting was held following the political crisis involving the position of Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir as Kedah menteri besar.
The media was not allowed into Wisma Darul Aman but could only wait outside the perimetre fence of the Kedah State Government Complex.
It is understood that at the outset, the meeting which was held in Block E of the building only involved the 20 state assemblymen, minus Mukhriz.
However, it is learnt that Mukhriz was later called in by three members of the council after their meetings with the other state assemblymen ended.
At 4.25pm, a vehicle ferrying Mukhriz, who is also Ayer Hitam state assemblyman, was seen heading towards Block E.
Kedah UMNO deputy liaison chief Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah, who is also Bakar Bata state assemblyman told the media he merely replied to questions posed by the council members and was not told of any decision.
“They asked two, three questions. I don’t know of any outcome,” he said, declining to comment further when leaving the Wisma Darul Aman area around 5.50pm.
Meanwhile, Guar Chempedak State Assemblyman Datuk Ku Abd Rahman Ku Ismail said he was unsure how long the issue would drag and declined to comment further on the meeting.
“I want to go home and rest, I don’t know how long this issue will drag on. No comment…I cannot comment, we meet next time,” he said.
Another state assemblyman, who did not want his name to be mentioned said all the state assemblymen were individually called to state their stand on the issue involving the menteri besar.
“After meeting (them) one after the other, we straightaway left,” he said, also declining to comment further.
The official vehicle ferrying Kedah Regency Council chairman, Tan Sri Tunku Sallehuddin Almarhum Sultan Badlishah was seen leaving Wisma Darul Aman at 5.20pm, followed by the official car of the Kedah menteri besar.
Earlier, a vehicle carrying a member of the Kedah Regency Council, Tunku Tan Sri Puteri Intan Safinaz Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah arrived at Wisma Darul Aman at 2.40pm, followed by another member, Tan Sri Tunku Abdul Hamid Thani Almarhum Sultan Badlishah at 2.55pm. Tunku Sallehuddin arrived at 3pm.
The political crisis in Kedah was triggered after Kedah state assemblymen and senior leaders of the state UMNO, headed by Ahmad Bashah openly voiced their loss of confidence at the leadership of Mukhriz as menteri besar and state UMNO liaison chief.
