RIO DE JANEIRO – Twenty people were killed and nine others injured Monday in a head-on collision between a bus and a truck in the southern Brazilian state of Parana, police said.
The accident occurred near the town of Cafezal do Sul on state road PR-323 and involved a bus operated by the municipal health department in Altonia.
The vehicle, which left Altonia around 5:30 am, was carrying some 30 patients and family members to a hospital in the city of Umuarama when it was struck by a truck going in the opposite direction.
The truck driver and 18 other people died in the fire that followed the crash, while a woman pulled alive from the wreckage was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
The driver was on his way home after delivering a cargo of milk to Cafezal do Sul, according to the truck’s operator, freight company Latco. – BERNAMA
