KUALA LUMPUR – The event that nasi lemak lovers should not miss is back for the second year this Sunday at the TM Convention Centre in Kuala Lumpur. The “I Eat Nasi Lemak†event brings 20 of the best nasi lemak sellers under one roof, with five of the vendors coming from the states of Penang, Kedah and Negeri Sembilan.
The attraction is really that one need not traipse all over the Klang Valley to enjoy some of the region’s best, if not the country’s best, nasi lemak. This also presents the opportunity to do a taste comparison to find the best among the best.
Aside from eating nasi lemak to your heart’s content, there will be other fun activities on the day such as the Nasi Lemak Eating Championships.
Last year, I Eat Nasi Lemak was a five-hour event attracting over 5,000 nasi lemak fans who ate over 10,000 plates of nasi lemak.
Organiser FriedChillies says as there are more stalls this year, they are extending it to a seven-hour event, from 10am to 5pm, and doubling the event space as they are expecting to attract 15,000 visitors.
FriedChillies’ event manager Hafeez Izwan says among the highlights are a nasi lemak ikan keli and a nasi lemak kukus goreng. “We also have a vegetarian nasi lemak from Kepong and a fully organic one, so more people can enjoy the event.†He adds that on this day, “no one needs to cook as everyone can tapau home the best nasi lemak in Malaysia.â€
As with last year, the event will run similar to a ‘Hari Kantin’. Visitors can purchase coupons and exchange it for nasi lemak and various lauk as well as drinks. The coupons are in RM2 denominations and can be purchased in booklets of RM10.
Vegetarian nasi lemak from Ru Yi Nasi Lemak in Kepong. The rice is tinged green with pandan and the sambal uses Chinese cabbage for texture and fried mushroom stalks at the side instead of ikan bilis.
In conjunction with the event, the organiser is running a World Nasi Lemak Day campaign to ask all Malaysians and Malaysian food fans overseas to eat nasi lemak in celebration on the weekend of the event.
“They can either cook it at home or go to the nearest Malaysian restaurant with friends and family. We want the nasi lemak love to spread far and wide,†says Mohd Adly Rizal, CEO of FriedChillies.
