PETALING JAYA – Two men who fled on a motorcycle to evade police inspection by riding it against the traffic flow were fined RM3,000 each, in default two months’ jail, by the Magistrate’s Court here today for obstructing a public servant in discharging his duties.
Magistrate Salamiah Salleh meted out the fine on Mohd Khairul Nizam Karim, 30, and Qamarul Ashraf Mohamad Zaki, 22, after they pleaded guilty to the charge.
Questioned by the magistrate the reason they avoid the police inspection, the two men said they did not have the licence.
The two men, who are friends, were charged with voluntarily obstructing Corporal Nurul Akbar Ahmad, who was conducting inspection at the time of the incident, from discharging his public functions.
The offence was committed at a police road block at Jalan Teknologi, heading to Jalan Persiaran Surian, Kota Damansara, here at 4.10 am last Jan 19.
They were charged under Section 186 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 of the same law, which provides an imprisonment for up to two years, or fine, or both, upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Mary Phoon Keat Mee prosecuted, while Mohd Khairul Nizam and Qamarul Ashraf were unrepresented. – BERNAMA
