NIBONG TEBAL – Two fans were sentenced to four days jail and fined RM6,000 each by the Jawi Magistrate’s Court here today after pleading guilty to possessing fireworks during a Super League football match between Penang and Sarawak last Saturday (Feb 11).

Magistrate Shamsol Azwa Martadza also ordered factory worker Mohd Afizal Mohd Aziz, 22, and fisherman Muhamad Khairi Mat Yusoff, 28, to be jailed for six months if they failed to pay the fine.

Both the accused were jailed for four days from the date of their arrest.
According to the charge, Mohd Afizal was alleged to possess two packs containing 12 ‘dragon’ firecrackers at Stadium Batu Kawan here at 8.45pm on Feb 11 while Muhamad Khairi was charged with carrying four pieces of ‘mercun bola’ at the stadium at 11pm on the same day.

Both the accused were charged under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957 which carries a jail sentence of up to seven years, or a maximum fine of RM10,000, or both upon conviction.

Earlier, lawyer Foo Siew Pheng from the National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK) requested for the fine against the accused to be reduced as they had repented and promised not to repeat the offence.

The prosecution was led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Afiq Nazrin Zaharinan. – BERNAMA
