NIBONG TEBAL: The Batu Kawan Umno division had a meeting with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to explain on a police report lodged by one of its leaders on sovereign fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
Penang Umno liaison committee chief Datuk Zainal Abidin Osman said the group met Najib yesterday to explain about the report and stressed it was made on a personal capacity of a leader. Najib is 1MDB’s advisory council chairman.
“They told Najib there was no ill intent in the police report.
“The members were also briefed on the questions they had about 1MDB and were satisfied with the answers given,” he said at a press conference in Kampung Sungai Setar Kechil, Sungai Acheh here today.
Police have opened an investigation paper on a report lodged by Batu Kawan Umno vice-chairman Datuk Seri Khairuddin Abu Hassan over the sovereign fund last week.
Last week, Khairuddin was reported to have lodged a report at the Dang Wangi police station in Kuala Lumpur, urging police to conduct a ‘detailed and comprehensive’ investigation.
In an immediate response, 1MDB statement issued a statement saying that it was aware of the report and felt that it did not have any legal basis.
“We have not seen any documentation related to this, so are unaware of the nature of the complaint.
“However, we are confident that it will have no legal basis. We welcome any investigation into our affairs and the opportunity to rebut malicious allegations,” the statement read.-NST
