KOTA BHARU – Monitoring of 172 pondok-style Islamic educational institutions in the country showed that none of them was involved in acts of extremism or militancy, said Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Senator Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.
He said the Advisory Board for Islamic Education Coordination (Lepai) conducted the monitoring following a threat by the Islamic State (IS) militant group to target Malaysia.
Asyraf Wajdi spoke to reporters after opening a conference of eastern zone Pondok school teachers here.
At the event, he handed over RM15.67 million to 72 pondok-style Islamic educational institutions in the east coast.
The contribution was part of RM25 million allocated for pondok schools which was contained in Budget 2015 tabled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in October last year. – BERNAMA
