BANGKOK – A van carrying 13 Myanmar migrant workers rammed the rear of a 10-wheeler lorry in northern Thailand early today and burst into flames, burning to death all the workers and the Thai van driver, police said.

A police officer in Mueng in the Singburi province said the eight women and six men were burnt beyond recognition in the accident which happened at about 2.30 am (3.30 am in Malaysia) in the province, about 140km north of here.

He said the van had come from Mae Sot, a town located near the Thai-Myanmar border.

He also said that the lorry driver who survived the fiery crash told police investigators the van crashed into his vehicle from the back and was immediately engulfed by flames.

The police officer said the police were seeking the cooperation of eye-witnesses to assist in the investigation.

Thailand hosts a large number of migrant workers from Myanmar, mainly in the construction, agriculture and fisheries industries. – BERNAMA
