KUALA LUMPUR – About 1,000 media practitioners in the country, as well as from several Asean member countries, gathered here today for the inaugural National Journalists’ Day (Hawana) celebration.
Themed “Championing the People, Building the Nation”, it will be held at the Matrade Exhibition and Convention Centre and will be launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak at 5 pm.
The celebration will start with the “Wacana Hawana”, programme from 10.30 am to noon involving discussion among editors and eminent local media icons on the future importance of the media in Malaysia and the issuance of a declaration that underlines the direction of the journalism and media industry in the country.
At the launching event, the programme would start with speeches by representatives from young journalists and press icons, followed by the prime minister’s speech.
The highlight will be the presentation of the Tokoh Hawana Award to an individual who contributes a lot to the development of the journalism industry.
Hawana is organised with the main objective of giving due recognition to the role of the media in developing the country and strengthening social unity.
The Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) with the cooperation from the various media practitioners and organisations have taken the initiative to organise the Hawana to uphold the journalistic professionalism in the country. – BERNAMA
