KUALA LUMPUR – Felda United continued its impressive form in the Malaysia Cup competition by edging star-studded Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) 4-3 in a seven-goal Malaysia Cup first leg semifinal thriller at the Selayang Stadium, near here last night.
Felda United who beat former champions Selangor in the quarterfinals, will play the second leg at the Larkin Stadium in Johor, reputed to be the fortress of JDT, on Oct 25.
In a match that was played under wet and slippery conditions, due to rain in the early part of the match, both teams found difficulty to control play.
However, Felda United who seemed to have adopted better to the conditions took the lead through their Liberian import Edward Junior Wilson who fired a fierce shot in the 7th minute.
The squad coached by Irfan Bakti Abu Salim continued to torment JDT and deservingly scored the second through Ahmad Syamim Yahya in the 42nd minute.
JDT came back the stronger of the two in the second half to reduce the deficit when their Argentina import Jorge Pereyra Diaz scored in the 52nd minute.
Four minutes later Felda suffered a major blow when central defender Mohd Nasriq Baharom was given the marching order by referee Samsudin Ibrahim after receiving a second Yellow card.
The one-man disadvantage however, failed to dampen the spirit of Irfan’s boys when Makeche Ndumba struck in the 60th minute to make it 3-1.
JDT staged a spirited fightback to draw level with goals from Luciano Figueroa (80th min) and Pereyra (88th min) but Makeche had the last laugh when he coolly chipped over the advancing JDT goalkeeper to give his team a slim advantage when going to Johor for the return leg. – Bernama
